Link Exchange Networks Versus Reciprocal Links
It's old news... getting other sites to link to yours, particularly from sites relevant to your content, can help improve search engine ranking of your site.
But, often, you can only obtain links via a link exchange, or through paid link listings.
If you are considering a paid link exchange network to host your link on other sites, be wary! Many of those paid linking networks do not give you the full benefits to help your search rankings.
Before you signup with a link exchange network, first ensure they offer all these services so you can get maximum return on your advertising investment:
1) Make sure they do not require any type of reciprocal link from you, either via their partners or for their own exchange network. 2) Make sure they do not require you to place any code onto your site. 3) Make sure they reveal the web sites that will be hosting your link. Most link exchange networks will only say what types; or categories, of sites will host your link, but they won't tell you the exact URLs. Insist on knowing the URLs so you can verify that those sites are relevant to yours, and so you can check them to make sure they are indeed hosting your link properly. 4) Make sure your link is placed on the MAIN page of each site, not on any hidden pages or links pages. What good is it to pay for link placement when no one sees your link, or if search engines rank the link page poorly? 5) Make sure they place YOUR web site URL into the link, and NOT a re-direct URL. Most link networks will not link directly to your site, but instead will route your link through a re-direct. This is NOT good for helping your search ranking. So why do they re-direct your URL instead of using your direct link? It's so you cannot find out the URLs of the sites hosting your link! Probably because the sites are not suitable, have poor Alexa ranks, are poorly designed, or your link is on a hidden page. 6) Make sure they allow YOU to pick the sites you are willing to pay to host your link. Most networks won't let you do this. Insist of knowing the urls of their partner sites, and insist on being able to preview them before you pay for your link placement. Otherwise, you could be paying for your link to appear on non-relevant sites, or on sites that contain inappropriate content, or WORSE you may be paying even though your link isn't on the site(s)! 7) Make the link network reveal the Alexa rank of each publisher site. Most networks will only give you an 'average Alexa rank' of their partners. This is not good, because you may end up paying for link placement on the web sites in that group with the poorest Alexa ranks because the higher ranking sites may opt to not host your link. 8) Make sure the network allows you to create your link using a combination of graphics, text, rich media, as well as multiple links to various pages of your site. Unfortunately, most link networks will only allow one link, with either a banner or text. 9) Make sure they allow you to pay less to lower Alexa rank web sites. 10) Make sure they GUARANTEE your link WILL BE HOSTED on the EXACT WEB SITE URLs YOU PICKED, and WILL BE HOSTED ON THE MAIN PAGEs of those sites!
