Pulsar Marketing offers innovative advertising

The internet is an ever-evolving entity, and is much more than a mere series of electronic connections to digitized media resources. Although the internet is operated by machines, Pulsar Marketing views the internet as an entity because its use is driven by people, and people are the true source of its evolution.

Only through the realization that people shape the internet environment, will marketing agencies be able to deploy effective advertising. Behavioral and demographic targeting barely scratch the personality surface. Marketing agencies must dive much, much deeper.

It takes much more knowledge than understanding what people do online and what geographic area they are from, their age groups, genders, etc. To really reach people, a scan of their psyches is a necessity.

Why do people do certain things online, but not other activities? What drives them to make a decision? What are all the influences, including those generated offline by world events and public opinion, which molds their behaviors?

No person was ever born connected to the internet from the moment of their first breath of life. At some point in time, whether age 8 or 68, each person had chosen whether or not to become a part of the internet world, and at least initially what types of web sites they would visit, not visit, and to what degree of trust they would bestow.

As people use the internet, their behaviors may change. Sites they would not visit before; either due to lack of knowledge of their existence, lack of interest, or for distrust reasons, they may begin visiting. What factors modified such behavior?

Peer influence is one such factor, as indeed are world events and as personal needs change. For example, a 45 year old male with 20 years tenure may not have any interest in a job placement web site, unless he loses his job due to company lay offs. Such a person who had been previously overlooked by an employment resource entity would instantly become a prime candidate. Hence, demographic targeting alone is not an inclusive marketing strategy.

Often, marketing agencies focus only on the 'positive' aspects of their targeted audience, such as who is 'currently' seeking a certain product or service, instead of analyzing the 'negative' aspects of who may be a 'future' demographic; and most importantly, what are each demographics' fears? Who fears becoming unemployed? Who fears security compromise of their personal data? And who worries about their health? The list is endless.

The saying: "Sh## Happens" also applies to internet behaviours and personal preferences. One day a consumer may enjoy local news, but the next day decide to just review sports updates. One day a consumer may be employed, but the next day could be layed-off. One day a consumer may have no interest in humor videos, but the next day a friend gets him hooked.

To each person, the internet is a personal experience. Their use, or lack of use, is dictated by their personalities, peer influences, world events, fears, anxieties, hopes and dreams.

People are people, and the internet is people. Data mining is a science, and as such does not completely analyze consumer personalities, nor completely predicts future demographic targeting.
